BT broadband deals

BT is the big boy of broadband and phone - the UK's biggest provider. It often isn't the cheapest around, even with a special promo deal, but BT broadband customers can also get BT TV, including discounted BT Sport. If you’re after a mobile deal, BT also offers Sim only deals via BT Mobile.

What does BT offer?

BT has a broad range of broadband packages, starting with BT’s Fibre Essential, which comes with speeds of 36Mbps. If you want a faster service, its Fibre 1 package clocks in at 50Mbps, and Fibre 2 achieves speeds around 67Mbps. If you have a need for speed, it also offers speeds of up to 900Mbps. To find out which speed is right for you, see our Cheap Broadband guide.

BT TV is only available to broadband customers - BT's cheaper than rival providers Sky and Virgin Media, but offers a smaller selection of channels.

It also runs its own mobile phone service BT Mobile, which 'piggybacks' off the EE network. See our Cheap Mobile Finder for the latest BT Mobile deals and all deals that use the EE network.

Why get a broadband package from BT?

BT reigns as the UK's largest broadband provider, offering widespread coverage and packages. However, while its extensive network ensures accessibility and scores 'good' (6.6/10) in our customer service survey it's not the cheapest, But some may prefer to pay more for a brand they know and has decent service

How good is BT's customer service?

BT's customer service is rated ‘good’ overall (6.6/10)

In our November 2023 poll, 50% of the 1,200 BT customers who answered scored it ‘great’ for customer service, and almost 18% rated it ‘poor’.

Does BT offer broadband only options

Yes, it does. If you don’t use or want a landline, you’ll be able to get broadband-only deals with BT, which might work out slightly cheaper as it now charges for a landline.

However, bear in mind that as well as not being able to make calls, you won’t be able to receive incoming calls, nor make calls to emergency services.

What BT broadband speeds can I get?

BT offers one of the widest ranges of broadband packages with varying speeds, including:

  • BT’s Fibre Essential - 36Mbps
  • Fibre 1 - 50Mbps
  • Fibre 2 - 67Mbps
  • Fibre 100 – 145Mbps
  • Fibre 500 – 500Mbps
  • Fibre 900 – 900Mbps

You also get free access to over five million BT Wi-fi hotspots.

BT uses the Openreach network, so it’s available to the majority of households, but not all homes can get the faster speeds – use our postcode checker to see if you can get it.

What BT broadband deals are available to new customers?

Use our Broadband comparison tool to find the latest BT broadband deals that are available to new customers. If you’re seeking lightning-fast speeds and it’s available in your area, we’ll show you the best deals available. To tempt you in, introductory offers tend to include various rewards such as a virtual prepaid Mastercard, which is just as good as cash.

Can existing BT broadband customers get access to current deals?

Introductory offers tend to include various rewards such as a virtual prepaid Mastercard. If you're an existing customer of BT's, you won't be eligible for these deals, but if you're out of contract, you'll be able to haggle with BT to get a better deal. In our last haggling poll, in December 2023, 76% of BT customers who tried to haggle told us they were successful in negotiating a better deal, showing what's possible.

What is fibre broadband?

Fibre broadband starts its journey from an exchange, zipping through fibre-optic cables buried underground to a cabinet near your home.

Traditionally, it then relied on copper wires to make the final dash into your home, but with the rise of fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP), fibre-optic cables now go straight into your home meaning you’re capable of getting lightning-quick and super reliable internet.

BT line rental

You now have to pay extra if you want to have a landline included with your broadband which adds £5/month to any broadband package. BT has three main call packages to choose from: Pay-as-you-go, 700 Minutes, and Unlimited Minutes.

BT TV

BT TV is essentially NOW TV with a BT TV box. It offers flexible add-ons that you can turn on and off at anytime.

The add-ons include the NOW Sky Sports Pass, BT TV Kids and the NOW Sky Cinema Pass, as well as other providers such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video

Compare BT against other UK providers

Our top need-to-knows

1

Who we do and don't compare

This tool looks at 31 of the biggest providers, including the giants of BT, Sky and Virgin. Plus special deals we've found or blagged that we think are top picks. Yet there are also many small providers we can't list - which occasionally have cheap deals - so it's always worth checking direct with any local provider you know of. Let us know if you find a top deal we've missed and see which providers this tool covers.

2

Switching can save you £100s

Many get a cheap promo deal for broadband, line rent and/or TV, and stick with it when it ends, usually paying £100s/year more than they started with. Don't let it be you - compare now and see if you could save

3

Fast advertised speeds don't mean faster broadband

Providers only have to advertise the average speed received by at least 50% of customers between 8pm and 10pm. Your actual speed can depend on a host of factors - see the full checklist of tips in Broadband Speed Boosting.

4

Consider your need for speed

If it's just you and the dog, you're likely to be fine with standard speeds averaging around 11Mb. If you share a house, or you use the web for movie downloads, streaming or gaming, you may want to opt for faster speeds in excess of 30Mb.

5

Beware of mid-contract switching costs

Usually you'll pay for the rest of the contract plus termination fees. If your provider increases prices mid-contract and didn't warn you before you signed up, you can switch penalty-free within 30 days of notification of the price hike.

If a link has an * by it, it is an affiliated link that helps MoneySavingExpert stay free to use, as it is tracked to us. If you go through it, it can sometimes result in a payment or benefit to the site. It's worth noting this means the third party used may be named on any credit agreements.

You shouldn't notice any difference and the link will never negatively impact the product. Plus the editorial line (the things we write) is NEVER impacted by these links. We aim to look at all available products. If it isn't possible to get an affiliate link for the top deal, it is still included in exactly the same way, just with a non-paying link.
